My aim is to get as many people to enjoy playing the saxophone, clarinet, flute and oboe as possible!  Whether you are a complete beginner or wish to upgrade, please call me to discuss your requirements.

If you can travel to Reading, Berkshire, I offer a free one hour saxophone or clarinet lesson to help you get started.  I will customise the lesson to your requirements.  As I work from home, you will have "one to one" time to try the instruments in a relaxed, friendly environment.  Further lessons are available for £13 for 30 minutes or £18 for 45 minutes. Don't worry if you have never played an instrument before.  Most people who come for the lesson have never played an instrument before and can’t read music.

Option 1 - for complete beginners to music:

By the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

1. play several simple tunes including "When The Saints" and Fly Me To The Moon (my personal favourite!)

2. read music;

3. look after your saxophone (assembly, cleaning and ongoing maintenance)

4.  try different makes and models including the Esprit and Yamaha alto saxophones and tenors if you wish (not recommended for children under 13-14 due to the weight).

Option 2  - for existing musicians changing to sax or upgrading sax players:

Try as many different saxophones as you like.  I always have over 300 saxes in stock including alto, tenor, soprano, baritone and sopranino saxophones .  Tell me in advance what your aim is and I will customise the session accordingly (ie you can try different reeds, mouthpieces, saxophones etc)

The following two emails are from customers who have recently had the lesson:-

Hi Richard,
 Just a quick thank you for all your help today, Jake (9 yrs old) was absolutely overjoyed with his lesson and his sax.
 He has already had the neighbours in for a recital and been to my brothers for a showing off session there, I can't recommend you highly enough. (But I will give it a good go) Jake was captivated from the moment he entered your home, and I was amazed at how much you taught him in such a short space of time. I will be putting your cards up far and wide.
 Thanks again,
 B. F.  Alton, Hampshire

Hi Richard,
I just wanted to drop you a quick line to say a huge thank you for your time on Monday. I was like an excited child before and after the lesson, and it's made the world of difference - no sore lip, a bottom C and some great stuff to work on. The Pink Panther is in the bag too, brilliant. You have a wonderfully relaxed yet encouraging way of teaching.
Take care
C. H.  Poole Dorset

Dear Richard, the tenor arrived spot on time and in perfect condition. It's beautiful!!
With the Java no. 2 reed I found it easy to play right across the range and found the action to be excellent. I expected everything to be much more difficult after the alto.

Many thanks for your excellent service.

Best wishes,

.   Bedford

Dear Richard
The sax arrived safely at lunchtime and I've been playing it ever since - the early signs are encouraging and I'm really looking forward to learning 'properly'. Thanks for your excellent service.

Many thanks, Richard - all looks good to me.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say it has been (and will continue to be) an absolute pleasure dealing with you. For inherently expensive instruments, you have made the process very easy and risk free - I'll be sure to continue to recommend you!

Speak/ see you again soon,

Dear Richard,
Thank you for this beautiful instrument. I'm loving it!  My teacher was really impressed with the Yamaha.  Could I please ask you to send the accessory pack as well: saxophone stand, tuition book, tuition DVD, padded neck strap and music stand. Thank you! :-)
Kind regards,
J.M. Edinburgh

Dear Richard,

Thank you very much for sorting this out so promptly (much more so than my reply!)
Your service has been faultless. If I come across anyone who needs it I will certainly recommend you.
I hope you still find plenty of time to play yourself and are not bogged down in admin!
With very best wishes,

Which saxophone should I start with?

If you are a beginner to music and plan to play on your own for pleasure, I recommend the Trevor James Esprit for £10 per month to hire.

These are designed for beginners and are ideal to learn on.  However, if your aim is to play with others in bands etc or you have played an instrument before, you may wish to consider the Yamaha alto for £19 per month as the tuning is better.

You would only need to upgrade from the Yamaha if you start pIaying professionally.  The hire scheme is completely flexible.  Many beginners start with an Esprit for £10pm to keep the cost down and upgrade to a Yamaha on purchase.  The rental paid on the Esprit would count towards the price of the Yamaha.

Special Offer:  Hire any instrument before 30/11/2012 and you have the option to hire an accessory pack half price.  This means that you can hire an alto sax and all of the accessories below for just £15 per month (£10pm for the sax and £5 for the accessory pack). All rental paid during the hire term is deducted from the price of the instrument (and accessories) if you do decide to buy.  There is no obligation to buy at any time, just have fun for a couple of months!

The accessory pack includes everything you need to get started:-

1. Tuition book with play along CD;

Jools Holland tuition DVD;

3. Saxophone stand (you will play it more if it is out ready to play!)

4. Padded neck strap (makes the sax feel 50% lighter)

 or harness which is ideal for children as it transfers the weight of the sax from the neck to shoulders;

5. Music stand (helps posture when reading from the tutor book) or a metronome /tuner;

If you prefer, you can hire them separately for £2 per month each.

The minimum hire term is just 2 months.  This offer enables you to have everything you need to give you the best chance of success for without committing to buying the sax and accessories.   If you have a music stand already, I will include a metronome / tuner or a case upgrade etc instead.

PRICE MATCH: I guarantee to offer the cheapest price for new Yamaha, Yanagisawa and Trevor James instruments in the UK.  If you can find one cheaper from an authorised UK dealer (with the full guarantee) I will beat the price or add some free accessories.  All instruments purchased from me come with the option to sell it back to me for a guaranteed price (from £20 per month depreciation).

Why hire or buy from me?

I am a clarinet and saxophone teacher and specialise in the instruments I know about; I always have over 400 instruments in stock.

I offer a free one hour trial lesson with no obligation to buy or hire.

 I check and play every instrument (using my own mouthpiece) to ensure that it is perfectly set up.  Ask other suppliers if they take the time to remove the manufacturers corks and play every note on the instrument before sale!

I will match any hire or purchase price.

I started playing the clarinet when I was a child and the saxophone soon after.  I enjoy playing both instruments in many bands, including Concert and Big Bands.  Since 1990 I have been the Musical Director of the Southlake Concert Band.

My students range in age from 6 to 88, and I run quartet groups for various abilities and ages.  I initially started hiring instruments to my students because many of them were having trouble finding hire agreements that were both flexible and affordable.

In 1996 I decided to offer instrument hire on a wider basis. The minimum period of hire is just 2 months; you may then either return the instrument or continue to hire it on a monthly basis for up to 12 months. All rental payments (and the deposit) are deducted from the purchase price if you buy the instrument. You may also transfer this discount to any other instrument purchased from me. This allows you to hire a cheaper instrument with the option to upgrade to a better quality instrument such as a Yamaha later. You may also change from alto to tenor/soprano, clarinet to sax etc.
